Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo is a renowned oral and maxillofacial surgeon, geneticist, and academic leader. He is currently the chief medical director at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where he oversees the clinical, administrative, and research activities of the hospital. He is also a professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
Professor Adeyemo has a distinguished academic and professional background. He graduated from the University of Ibadan in 1988 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. He completed his residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital between 1999 and 2004. He obtained a PhD in genetics from the University of Cologne, Germany, in 2006, with a German Government Scholarship. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Lagos, a Diploma in Research Bioethics, and a Certificate in Genetics and Genomics from Stanford University.
Professor Adeyemo is a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCDS), the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), and the International College of Surgeons (FICS). He has been involved in many research projects and grants, both nationally and internationally. He is one of the key personnel in the Building Research and Innovation in Nigeria Science (BRAINS) project, funded by the Fogarty/NIH, where he coordinates the genetics and genomics aspect of the project. He has also received grants from the CRC Unilag, the Lagos State Research Development Council, the TETFund, and the European Union.
Professor Adeyemo has a remarkable record of research excellence and impact. He has won several awards and distinctions, such as the University of Lagos Best Researcher Award (2006), the Best Researcher Award from the CMUL (2009), the Faculty of Dental Sciences, CMUL (2011, 2012, and 2014), and the Distinguished Researcher Award from the CMUL (2009). He was ranked as the most cited researcher in the University of Lagos and the 13th in Nigeria in 2015 by Webometrics. He has published over 168 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals, covering topics such as orofacial clefts, maxillofacial trauma, implantology, dento-alveolar surgery, maxillofacial reconstruction, maxillofacial oncology, and genetics/genomics of orofacial clefts. He has also presented his research works in more than 100 national and international conferences.
Professor Adeyemo is a respected and influential figure in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, genetics, and medical education. He is a member of several professional associations and societies, such as the Nigerian Dental Association, the Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation, and the Nigerian Society of Geneticists. He is also a reviewer and editor for several journals, such as the Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice, the Nigerian Journal of Surgery, and the African Journal of Biomedical Research.
